Privacy policy

The short version

besteed keeps your household's life on your phone. What you share with the people you live with is encrypted before it leaves the device, and our server only ever sees sealed envelopes it has no way to open.

That is not a promise about what we choose to look at. It is a fact about what we are able to look at.

What we store about you

Your account. Your email address and your name, as your Google or Apple account gives them to us, plus your chosen language and plan. That is all we hold about who you are.

Your household's shared data. Encrypted envelopes. Notes, tasks, lists, house records and money entries are sealed on your phone with a key that only the phones in your household have. We store the sealed result and hand it to the other phones. We cannot read it.

Your cloud backup, if you turn it on. Also encrypted on your phone before it is uploaded. We keep the three most recent ones and see nothing but bytes.

Crash reports, if you leave them on. The technical trace of the failure, the app version, the platform and the operating system version — and, if you were signed in, which account it was. No notes, no records, nothing you have written. We keep them 90 days and you can switch this off in Settings.

A notification token. So we can wake your phone up. The message we send is empty: it means "go and fetch what is there", because we could not write the content even if we wanted to.

Your subscription, if you buy Casa. Which store you bought it in, which plan, when it renews or ends, and the identifier the store gives the subscription. Never your card or your payment details: those stay with Google or Apple. We keep a log of the notices the store sends us (a renewal, a cancellation, a refund) so we can show you what happened.

What never leaves your phone

Photos of people and documents, the files you attach, the phone numbers of the people in your household, and the gift ideas you write down for them. These stay on the device and are not sent to us, ever.

Artificial intelligence: three uses, all yours to trigger

The AI is used in three places, and in all three you decide. When you jot something down: if the AI help is on and the sentence is not clear enough, the text of that sentence is sent. Bank statements: when you import one, the descriptions of the movements the app does not know yet are sent to be labelled — the text only, never amounts, dates or account numbers. Documents you ask the app to read: a contract in PDF or photo, or a bank statement in PDF, is sent whole so it can be read.

None of it is stored. It goes through our server to Anthropic, which returns the answer. Our server keeps only a cost counter; Anthropic processes it under its API terms and does not train its models on it. Without an account, or with the AI help switched off, nothing is sent.

Who else is involved

Google — sign-in and notifications. Apple — sign-in on iPhone. Anthropic — the AI reading, only when you have it on. Oracle — the server. Cloudflare — this website and the encrypted backups of the server itself. Resend — the few emails we send you, such as the notice that your plan is about to run out. RevenueCat — if you buy Casa, it checks your receipt with Google or Apple and tells our server whether the subscription is active; it sees your besteed account identifier and the store receipt, nothing else.

None of them can read your household's content, for the same reason we cannot.

Where everyone is, if you turn it on

Sharing your location is optional, and off until you turn it on. On the map screen there is a switch, with pauses (an hour, until tomorrow morning) and a full stop. Adults and guests decide for themselves.

Only while the app is open. Your phone reports a position every five minutes while besteed is on screen, and once more when you come back to it. With the app closed, nothing is measured and nothing is sent.

We keep the last position and nothing else. There is no trail and no history: each new position overwrites the one before. It is sealed on your phone like everything else, with a key only your household has, so our server holds an envelope it cannot open, and only the people in your household who have that key can see it. When you pause or stop, the envelope is overwritten and the last position goes with it.

Teenagers and children do not have the switch, and nothing happens in secret: they share only when an adult of the household gives them that permission, and the app tells them so with a banner they cannot hide. Removing the permission stops it, with nothing to do on their phone. Whoever turns it on is responsible for that choice; the terms say so.

This website

besteed.com sets no cookies of its own. To know how many people visit the site we use Cloudflare Web Analytics, which sets no cookies, does not fingerprint your browser and does not tell us who you are: only how many pages were seen and from which country. The one cookie there is, is named besteed_sessio, which the app places when you sign in from a browser and removes when you sign out or delete your account. It says only that this browser has a session, nothing about who you are, and its sole purpose is to take you straight to the app when you come back to besteed.com.

Children

A household has children in it, and besteed is built for that: a parent can create a record for a child who has no phone yet. That record lives on the household's phones and holds what the family puts in it. Accounts are for adults; whoever manages the household is responsible for what is written about the people in it.

Your rights

You can ask us what we hold about you, correct it, or take it away. Deleting your account is a button inside the app (Settings → Account), and there is a page for it here too if you no longer have the app installed.

Write to support@besteed.com for anything else. If you are in the EU and you think we have got it wrong, you can complain to your data protection authority.

When this changes

If we change something that matters, the app will tell you. This page always shows the date it was last touched.
