Privacy policy

The short version

besteed keeps your household's life on your phone. What you share with the people you live with is encrypted before it leaves the device, and our server only ever sees sealed envelopes it has no way to open.

That is not a promise about what we choose to look at. It is a fact about what we are able to look at.

What we store about you

Your account. Your email address and your name, as your Google or Apple account gives them to us, plus your chosen language and plan. That is all we hold about who you are.

Your household's shared data. Encrypted envelopes. Notes, tasks, lists, house records and money entries are sealed on your phone with a key that only the phones in your household have. We store the sealed result and hand it to the other phones. We cannot read it.

Your cloud backup, if you turn it on. Also encrypted on your phone before it is uploaded. We keep the three most recent ones and see nothing but bytes.

Crash reports, if you leave them on. The technical trace of the failure, the app version, the platform and the operating system version — and, if you were signed in, which account it was. No notes, no records, nothing you have written. We keep them 90 days and you can switch this off in Settings.

A notification token. So we can wake your phone up. The message we send is empty: it means "go and fetch what is there", because we could not write the content even if we wanted to.

What never leaves your phone

Photos of people and documents, the files you attach, the phone numbers of the people in your household, and the gift ideas you write down for them. These stay on the device and are not sent to us, ever.

Artificial intelligence, only if you ask for it

When "AI help on capture" is switched on and a sentence is not clear enough, the text of that sentence is sent to our server and on to Anthropic, which returns the date and the label.

That text is not stored. Our server passes it through and keeps only a cost counter. Switch the option off in Settings and nothing is sent at all.

Who else is involved

Google — sign-in and notifications. Apple — sign-in on iPhone. Anthropic — the AI reading, only when you have it on. Oracle — the server. Cloudflare — this website and the encrypted backups of the server itself.

None of them can read your household's content, for the same reason we cannot.

Children

A household has children in it, and besteed is built for that: a parent can create a record for a child who has no phone yet. That record lives on the household's phones and holds what the family puts in it. Accounts are for adults; whoever manages the household is responsible for what is written about the people in it.

Your rights

You can ask us what we hold about you, correct it, or take it away. Deleting your account is a button inside the app (Settings → Account), and there is a page for it here too if you no longer have the app installed.

Write to privacitat@besteed.com for anything else. If you are in the EU and you think we have got it wrong, you can complain to your data protection authority.

When this changes

If we change something that matters, the app will tell you. This page always shows the date it was last touched.
